Random Name Picker for Teachers
"Why do you always pick her?" A random picker ends that question. Here is how to use free GoPickaro tools for everyday classroom moments: calling on students, presentation order, groups and review games, without creating an account or uploading your class list.
Why pick students at random
- It feels fair. Students can see that nobody chose who gets the question, the presentation slot or the job nobody wants.
- Everyone stays ready. When any name can come up, the whole class has a reason to think about the answer, not only the students with raised hands. Teachers often call this approach "cold calling", popularised by Doug Lemov's Teach Like a Champion.
- It removes your own habits. We all tend to call on the same confident students. A picker spreads the turns out.
- It saves time. Groups, turns and order are decided in seconds, with no discussion.
Which tool for which moment
| Classroom moment | Tool | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| Call on a student for a question | Spin Wheel | Names only, Remove winner from list after winning on |
| Give each student a different question or task | Spin Wheel | Students on the outer ring, questions on the inner ring |
| Presentation or reading order | Instant Draw | Names Only, Pick all participants, Numbered list |
| Random groups or pairs | Team Generator | Choose number of groups or people per group |
| Pick 3 helpers or a class representative | Instant Draw | Names Only, set Winners to pick |
| Probability, number and board games | Dice Roller | D4 to D20, or a custom die up to 100 sides |
Set up your class list in two minutes
- Copy the names from your register or spreadsheet: select the column of names and copy.
- Paste into the participants box, one name per line. Spreadsheet columns paste that way automatically.
- Or load a file: use Import → TXT/CSV. In a CSV file, the first column is used as the name.
- Keep one file per class on your computer, for example
class-5B.txt. GoPickaro does not save lists, so the file lets you start any lesson in seconds.
Privacy: the names you paste are processed only in your browser. They are not uploaded to GoPickaro or stored, and they disappear when you close the page. On a projector, first names are enough, and you can also use student numbers. Follow your school's data protection policy.
Calling on students with the Spin Wheel
- Open the Spin Wheel on the classroom computer and paste the class list into Participants. Leave Prizes empty.
- Ask the question before you spin, and give a few seconds of thinking time. Everyone thinks, then one student answers.
- Press 1× Spin. When the name appears, press Confirm winner.
- With Remove winner from list after winning on, that student leaves the wheel, so everyone gets a turn before anyone is picked twice.
- Want to keep everyone alert even after their turn? Turn the option off, so any student can come up again.
If the wheel lands on a student who is absent today, use Disqualify & Re-spin: the name comes off the wheel without being recorded, and you spin again. Add it back next lesson.
The double wheel: a student and a question in one spin
This is where GoPickaro differs from a simple name wheel. Put the students on the outer ring and short questions or tasks on the inner ring, one per line:
One spin shows who answers and what they answer. After you press Confirm winner, the question that was used leaves the wheel, and with winner removal on, the student leaves too, which makes it a quick review game. The x2 at the end of a line keeps that task on the wheel for two turns before it disappears.
Random groups in one click
The Random Team Generator is made for this: paste the class list, choose the number of groups or how many students per group, and keep Keep teams even on so nobody ends up alone. Name the groups if you like, then print the result or copy it into your class platform. For group sizes, random roles and rotating groups across the term, see random groups for the classroom.
Presentation order with Instant Draw
- Open Instant Draw and choose Names Only.
- Paste the class list and keep Pick all participants checked.
- Under Result style, choose Numbered list, then press Draw Now.
- The whole class appears in a random order. That is your presentation order.
- Use Print to hand out the list, or Copy to paste it into your class platform.
If the class does not divide evenly, add the last one or two students to the groups before them. To choose only a few students, uncheck Pick all participants and set Winners to pick.
Using it well
- Keep the stakes low. Use random picking for practice and discussion, not for questions that could embarrass a student in front of the class.
- Offer a way out. A student can "phone a friend" or say "come back to me", and you return to them after another answer.
- Explain the rule once. Tell the class that the picker is truly random. Our fairness page explains how it works, which older students often find interesting.
- Project it. Seeing the wheel spin is part of what makes the result accepted. Use your browser's zoom (Ctrl and +) so names are readable from the back row.

Are my students' names saved or uploaded?
No. The list stays in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
How do I stop the same student being picked twice?
Keep Remove winner from list after winning on in the Spin Wheel. In Instant Draw, nobody is drawn twice in one draw.

Does it cost anything or need an account?
No. The tools are free, need no sign-up and run in a web browser.
